Building design and layout, building relocation
There are a number of site specific approaches that can be taken to reduce the effects of noise at protected premises or facilities. These include the use of acoustic insulation (see below), the design and layout of buildings, the re-location of existing buildings, and voice amplification systems (see below).
Designing buildings and spaces so that the building itself acts as a noise barrier can be effective, especially in densely populated areas. These techniques have been used successfully where land is of high value.
Site specific noise mitigation measures are best considered as a package of measures. The uses of site specific approaches are often on a case-by-case basis; thus, the site conditions and the nature and structure of the protected premises and facilities will be significant controlling factors. In addition any controls in the relevant plan and NZ Building Code requirements need to be considered.
